Following the success of the previous editions in Paris, Beirut and Milan, Nilufar Gallery, in collaboration with Shalini Misra Ltd, presents the 5th edition of SQUAT, which will be launched for the first time in London on 6 June 2016.
Founded in 2012 by Nilufar Gallery owner Nina Yashar, the ongoing project explores a new concept of exhibition that combines design, art and architecture and gives life to new and original domestic landscapes. SQUAT takes places in different locations and platforms, playing with diverse cultural, geographical and architecture environments.
To launch this first ever London edition, Nina Yashar has teamed up with Shalini Misra and Mehves Ariburnu, Director and Creative Advisor at Shalini Misra Ltd respectively . The creative trio will transform one of Shalini Misra's development projects, a 230 sqm Victorian lateral corner apartment located on South Audley Street, in the heart of Mayfair, into a high-concept decorative living space.
Inspired by the historic apartment's distinctive features, the interiors will challenge the boundaries between art, design and architecture, creating an innovative open dialogue and connecting different disciplines.
SQUAT will present unique design pieces from Nilufar Gallery's remarkable collection. These run the gamut from historic works by design masters such as Gio Ponti and Ico Parisi to creations by leading contemprorary designers and young talents, such as Patricia Urquiola, Martino Gamper and Bethan Laura Wood.
Among the historic pieces on show will be a 1960's LB7 modular bookcase by italian master Franco Albini, 1950's low table, stools and chairs by Gio Ponti and a stunning 1930's Barovier & Toso chandelier. SQUAT London will also feature six 691 chairs by Ico Parisi (the 691 model was nominated for a Comppasso d'Oro in 1955).
Cutting-edge pieces exclusively designed for Nilufar Gallery will find a place alongside iconic pieces from contemporary designers including: Lindsey Adelman, Michael Anastassiades, Caturegli and Formica, David/Nicolas, Massimiliano Locatelli, Roberto Giulio Rida, Fabien Cappello, Ego Vicente and Osanna Visconti di Modrone, to name but a few.
Luxurious hand-knotted vintage rugs will be showcased together with handmade contemporary carpets such as the "Expected to be or happen at a time still to come" carpet by Martino Gamper, a unique piece commissioned by Design Miami/Basel 2008 on the occasion of the Designer of the Future award.
Crossing styles and eras, the design pieces will be overlooked by a selection of remarkable artworks; an eclectic mix of old masters and modern art.
SQUAT will also provide an inspiring backdrop for private dinners, and evening receptions, as well as public events, lectures and talks. Curators, collectors, critics and creatives will gather at SQUAT to discuss the value of art and design and the issues related to these sectors, offering a rare opportunity to meet leading contemporary talents and explore the work of some of the most influential designers in history.
SQUAT will be open to the public from Tuesday to Saturday, 12.00pm-6.00pm
